Here's how the exemption from transport tax and the confirmation of benefits are currently arranged - it's simple and straightforward, without any bureaucracy.
Who can avoid paying transport tax?
The following groups are most often exempted:
- Persons with disabilities of the first and second groups (sometimes also the third group, if this is specified in your region);
- Veterans and participants in military operations;
- Pensioners (in some regions);
- Large families;
- Heroes of Russia and the USSR, holders of the Order of Glory;
- Victims of radiation accidents;
- Certain categories of participants in the Special Military Operation and their families.
Each region has its own nuances: in some places, you can be completely exempted from the tax, while in others, you can only be exempted for low-powered cars or special vehicles for people with disabilities. Therefore, it's always a good idea to check the local laws, as the savings can be quite significant.
How can I confirm my eligibility for a benefit?
Nowadays, it's becoming easier:
- Automatically: the tax authorities receive data from the Social Fund, the Federal State Register of Real Estate, and other agencies. If you are a pensioner, a person with disabilities, or a large family, the benefit is often applied without your involvement.
- By submitting an application: if the benefit is not taken into account or if you want to choose a specific object (such as one of two cars), you can submit an application through the Federal Tax Service's personal account, the Multifunctional Center of Services, or directly to the tax authorities.
What documents do I need?
Typically, you will need to provide the following:
- A passport;
- A document confirming your eligibility for the benefit (such as a disability certificate, a veteran's card, a pension card, or birth certificates for large families);
- Documents related to your vehicle (such as a vehicle's technical specifications and registration certificate);
- In some cases, you may also need to submit an application to choose the object for the benefit.
If the necessary information is not available in the Federal Tax Service's database, they may request additional documents from social protection or other agencies.
Is it possible to reduce the tax if you have a disability or another status?
Yes! Even if there is no full exemption, it is often possible to:
- reduce the rate (for example, for disabled people or pensioners);
- receive a deduction (for example, for low-powered cars or special vehicles);
- reduce the tax base (for example, for land, minus 6 acres, and for transport, regional discounts).
Practical tip
Check your data in the FTS personal account before the tax is calculated - this makes it easier to avoid overpayments and apply for a benefit in time. If something is not taken into account, immediately send the documents through the personal account or the MFC. In disputed cases, you can re-submit the application after correcting the data.
